When humans consume food or water contaminated with Salmonella, they can develop salmonellosis, a type of food poisoning. Symptoms of salmonellosis usually include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting. While most cases of salmonellosis are mild and resolve on their own within a few days, severe cases can lead to complications such as dehydration, bloodstream infections (bacteremia), and even death, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
